Jacksonville, Al.
The Jax State Gamecocks came from behind to defeat the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers by a final score of 20-17 Tuesday night at JSU Stadium.
The Gamecock offense started slow, allowing the visitors to run out to a 17-7 lead. The Toppers were able to take a 17-10 lead into halftime. The third quarter was a defensive battle, with neither team yielding a score. The pace and time of possession of the Gamecock offense began to wear on the WKU defense in the 4th quarter, enabling the Gamecock offense to finally get on-track. After scoring the tying touchdown with 3:39 remaining, the Gamecocks got the ball back with 2:32 left in regulation. The Gamecock offense quickly covered 45 yards, allowing Alen Karajic to line up for a 41 yard field goal try. In spite of his plant foot slipping on the try, Karajic pulled the kick inside of the right upright as time expired, sealing the victory for the Gamecocks.
JSU is now 6-2 on the season, and in a non-transitional season would be in-line for a bowl game. Due to NCAA rules, the Gamecocks are only eligible this season if an insufficient number of schools reach the 6 win plateau.
The Gamecocks return to action next Wednesday night, as they make the trip to Miami to take on the FIU Panthers.
